- Arapaima (Arapaima Gigas)
- Digital painting
Virtually unchanged for millions of years, the arapaima is truly a living fossil. Also known as the pirarucu, this predatory fish is one the largest freshwater fish in the world. While it’s not typically dangerous to humans, its tough, bony head combined with its strength and speed can make the arapaima like a living torpedo in its natural habitat, the Amazon River. Best not to get in front of it.
