For most of the 20th century the art history of the Shang Dynasty has been taught with bronze vessels excavated in Northeast China. Those objects, although remarkable, include very few images of humans, or human-like figures . Recent excavations at Sanxingdui in Southwest China have revealed the first such figures known to Chinese archaeology. All of them are shamanic figures of one kind or
another. This one has wings. (FLG)
