An example of a large Tarahumara drum. Traditionally, these are made of cedar with cow hide for the heavy covers and string. Drums are used to call for a gathering of the tribe and also play an essential part in tribal rituals. Over time, the influence of Christianity has altered many of their religious traditions.

The name "Tarahumara" is thought to be a mistranscription of an original name, "Raramuri," which is interpreted as "runners on foot" or "those who run fast." The Tarahumara people have a tradition of long-distance running. Nearly 70,000 members of this tribe live in northern Mexico.
