This woodcut was made for a book of poems Kandinsky wrote and illustrated with his revolutionary abstract art called Sounds (1913). This faithful impression is from a 2nd edition authorized by his estate in the 1960s. it is from the collection of George Wittenborn, publisher of the standard English translation of Kandinsky's book, with an introduction by S.W. Haytor, who was Jackson Pollock's teacher.
Kandinsky wrote an important book explaining his transpersonal philosophy called The Spiritual in Art just before the beginning of his abstract breakthrough in 1910. No book by a 20th century artist was so influential in Europe and the U.S. (FLG)
