Buddha Head, Gandhara, which today is part of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Initially there were no images of the Buddha. This changed in the Kingdom of Gandhara, which was at its height between the 1st and 5th century. After Alexander the Great came through in the fourth century BCE, Greco-Roman art circulated for several centuries. A native tradition began that portrayed Buddha looking a good deal like a Greek god or a Roman leader dressed in a toga. Such statues from Gandhara, carved from the time of the Roman empire, are the world's first images of the Buddha as a human being. The bun at the top of Buddha's head is the mark of a self-denying ascetic. (FLG, GV-1, 78)
