Best known for her provocative portraits of women, London-based British artist Lucie Bennett explores female identity and sexuality using simple, thick lines with alluring swirls and twirls, and block colour forms to create distinctive, timeless pieces.
Many of her works bring to mind playboy bunnies and the golden age B-movie heroines of the 1960's & 70's. These images of women in various guises; as haunting sirens, alluring pin-ups and supernatural nymphets; playing absorbing games with the viewer’s preconceptions of these deceptively familiar archetypes.
In 2005 Bennet released 12 female form-inspired works, including Red Felt Tip Girl (here), and Green Felt Tip Girl. This sassy female artist, who went everywhere on roller-blades, created confident silhouettes of 12 women, who just like her, were all full of attitude, self-awareness and individuality.
“I usually go for more 80s inspired colours - bright fun oranges - more fluro-style, strong greens and blues. Choosing the perfect colour palette is a huge part of Bennett’s working practice, and hours are spent in the print studio mixing as she considers the desired results. Sometimes initial ideas will be changed as they react with a previously printed colour; of course this is one of the advantages of working hands-on and being present during the proofing process, which Bennett insists on to cast her discerning eye.
