“From Whence We Came”, a richly textured painting explores the African American spirit of family, work, and community through impasto strokes of earthy greens, blues, and ochres. Inspired by my family’s history and the boarder collective experience of African Americans, the composition reflects resilience, connection, and legacy. At the center stands a male figure, embodying strength and labor, while a female matriarch gazes toward the future with resolve and hope. collaged paper patterns and layered profiles weave through the composition, evoking the storytelling traditions of quilts and oral traditions of quilts and oral histories. Together, these elements pay homage to the enduring bond of family and the vibrant tapestry of African American heritage.
Just shy of the 20th anniversary of the artwork’s inception, five printer’s proofs from the original serigraph of “From Whence We Came” were hand-embellished to create five new original paintings. Each piece features a distinct style and color palette, reflecting a new era while preserving the essence of the original work. This series breathes new life into the legacy of the painting, offering a fresh perspective on its enduring message.
