  • Artist: Olaniyi Omotayo

Born in 1995 in the vibrant, culturally rich region of Ondo State, Nigeria, Olaniyi Omotayo has proven that artistic dreams can thrive against all odds. From a young age, Olaniyi's love for drawing and self-expression knew no bounds. He sketched and scribbled in his school notebooks, a habit that often led to reprimands from his parents and teachers. But young Olaniyi never allowed these admonitions to deter his passion for art.

In 2018, he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Adekunle Ajasin University, demonstrating that he was not just an artist but also a determined scholar. The year 2019 marked a turning point as he moved to Lagos, the heart of Nigeria's art scene, to pursue his dreams further. It was there that he immersed himself in the world of art exhibitions, learning from seasoned masters who recognized his undeniable talent.

Olaniyi Omotayo's journey as a self-taught artist has been nothing short of remarkable. His works have graced exhibitions worldwide, including the prestigious "Latitude of Expression" exhibition at Mitochondria Gallery in Houston, Texas. His mixed-media creations, combining acrylic, oil, and charcoal on canvas and paper, are both visually stunning and conceptually powerful.

His art revolves around the theme of confidence and self-esteem, exploring their place in our intricate social tapestry. Olaniyi's bold subjects painted in monochromatic skin textures symbolize that confidence is not merely skin deep; it's a powerful force that can transform lives.

As an artist, Olaniyi Omotayo challenges us to ponder: What is the true essence of confidence? How does it manifest in our lives? What role does it play in our journey towards self-fulfillment?

Olaniyi's story is an inspirational testament to resilience and the indomitable spirit of an artist. His work embodies the belief that self-confidence, like his monochromatic skin textures, can be the foundation upon which we paint the vibrant and colorful canvas of our lives.

Artist Statement

I extensively use oil and acrylic on canvas in my artistic endeavors, focusing primarily on exploring the concept of "folk art." I delve into the intricate relationships we share with our environment and fellow beings, emphasizing the cultivation of self-confidence for personal growth. Furthermore, I explore the vibrancy of vintage African culture, drawing parallels with contemporary experiences. My overarching objective is to convey the essence of my art independently, fostering a profound and inspirational connection with those who engage with it.
