Limited Edition Risograph. "Open 24 Hours" refers to the garbage and littered areas of the artist’s Humboldt/East Garfield Park neighborhood, where she finds copious amounts (between 4 to more than 10) of these beer and liquor bottles daily while she walks her dogs. Each of these still life images represents a single day of “bottle picking,” with the series itself functioning as an archive of sorts. The bottles have been stripped of their labels and washed, then configured by Soto to evoke a class still life painting in the tradition of Italian painter Giorgio Morandi. Open 24 Hours alludes to the burden and heartbreak of alcohol use and dependency resulting from pervasive poverty, unemployment, drug abuse, depression, low self-esteem and the glorification of excessive behavior.
