- Jonathan Yeo
Jonathan Yeo is a British artist best known for his provocative portraits of politicians and figures from popular culture. “I’m always thinking: how far can I push it,” the artist has said. “You can do so much with a portrait, particularly with people’s expectations. I’ve been down all kinds of dead ends and wild goose chases over the years, but I still believe it’s irresponsible not to take risks.” Throughout his career, the artist has been the subject of media attention for his unabashed criticisms of politicians like George W. Bush and Tony Blair, made from images taken from pornographic magazines. He is also well known for his paintings depicting celebrities and has painted portraits of Cara Delevingne, Damien Hirst, Kevin Spacey, and Malala Yousafzai, among others. Born on December 18, 1970, in London, United Kingdom Yeo taught himself to paint as a young adult when he was recovering from Hodgkin’s lymphoma. In 2013, he was the subject of the retrospective at the National Portrait Gallery in London, which received critical praise. Today, his works are held in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London. The artist lives and works in London, United Kingdom.
