Exploring the esoteric qualities of femininity and nature; ‘SOUL CIRCUS,’ by Gina M and Deirdre Sullivan-Beeman, represents our naïveté (the young girl) and our eerie magical sides (the elephant). The elephant’s truck symbolizing the phallic side of man but at the same time holds the Hindu way of thought found in the form of Ganesha – who represents protection; thus holding the young girl “tight as a drum” in his belly. The piece merges the realms of the eclectic mix of fine art with magical realism, employing the juxtaposition of modern day ceramics and 14th century traditional oil and egg tempera painting techniques.
