There is a stand of giant Sequoia trees (Redwoods) in British Columbia in Redwood Park. In 1893 Peter and David Brown inherited a large tract of land and instead of farming it they decided to fill this space with their favourite trees. These giant Sequoia are now 130 years old and I took the trouble to visit the park, crouching beneath a magnificent trunk to look upwards and draw.
The first pastel drawing of this tree was so large and so dusty that while I covered my paper and board with pastel chalk the dust fell down on my hands and clothes and also my face. When I got up to leave I had no idea that I looked like an alien and frightened some people in the car park as I retreated home. The pastel drawing was so emotive that I soon painted this acrylic painting from the original drawing.
