The botanist, Sir Joseph Banks, after which the park is named, accompanied Captain Cook on his maiden voyage to Australia. He is therefore known as one of the founding fathers of Australia. His purpose was to collect plant specimens and take them back to England for propagation. This painting depicts the terrain that characterises Sir Joseph Banks Park with its gnarly trunked Banksias. These very resilient coastal plants, can withstand the salt laden winds and hot sun.
