Fisherman's Retreat

This painting evokes childhood memories of natural canals, which can be found along the Mediterranean coast of France, and where fishing huts would mysteriously appear in the general landscape, so often no one knowing who they belonged to.
An outside working area showing an upturned boat, chair, bench, basket and fishing nets is seen in the foreground as part of the shore opposite the hut, and beyond that is an old jetty where two fishing boats are moored.
The scene is viewed from a window of another fisherman's hut, with a whitish wooden frame and blue shutters, which are quite typical of the South of France. On the window sill sits a glass of red wine and some items of fishing gear.
With its pale winter sky, the painting creates an atmosphere of still calmness and solitude.
