Gemma Hill (b. UK) is a London-based painter whose work explores wildness as a site of myth, memory, and profound potential. Working primarily in oil, she draws on ecofeminist theory, Celtic folklore, and symbolic narrative to access ancestral knowledge and reimagine our relationship with the more-than-human world. Her paintings evoke the untamed forces beneath contemporary life—challenging systems of control through allegory and transformation.

Hill’s practice has drawn comparisons to Paula Rego, Leonora Carrington, and Hieronymus Bosch for its psychological intensity and storytelling. Her recent body of work was developed studio mentorship with artist Kate Dunn.

Statement

Gemma Hill is a painter exploring the wild as a space of potential—drawing on ecofeminism, mythology, and internal landscapes. Her works blend surreal figuration with symbolic storytelling, inviting viewers into ambiguous, emotionally charged worlds. Working primarily in oil, she builds layered surfaces that evolve intuitively, balancing stillness with unsettling transformation.

Gemma Hill is a painter exploring the wild, a space of profound potential—one we have long distanced ourselves from. This body of work journeys into the forgotten and repressed—exploring untamed forces dormant beneath contemporary life. Through narrative, she examines myth, memory, and nature, drawing on ecofeminist ideas, mythology and Celtic folklore.

She aims to inspire a return to authentic existence, transcending control and fostering a deep, reciprocal bond with the wild. This work urges us to reevaluate our place in nature and embrace our collective potential to create more harmonious futures.
