Journal Entry of April 11, 1919
Another grueling day in the belly of the earth. The coal mine that sustains this small hamlet echoes with the rhythmic clang of picks against rock and air that hangs heavy with dust. I find solace in the stolen glances and secret smiles exchanged with my partner, Eli. Our love remains concealed beneath the surface, hidden from the world above. But as the sun dipped beyond the horizon, casting an orange-pink glow over the hills, we returned home, our modest cottage a sanctuary, a place where our love can breathe freely. With calloused hands intertwined, we shared stories of our day, ending the evening with me reading more chapters of My Antonia to my dearest Eli.
