Steve Silk x
Steve Silk began his photographic career as a journalist, photographing everything from forest fires in Big Sur and rock stars to studio shots of presidential candidates and travel photos in Bali. Then came a stint as a garden photographer, shooting hundreds of the best gardens throughout North America. His pictures have appeared in scores of newspapers and magazines and in more than a dozen books. Finally, he is focused on the subject that initially piqued his interest in photography: landscapes.
As someone who grew up at the edge of an expansive New England forest, Steve is most drawn to wild places, to those elemental, expansive landscapes that exude a raw energy undiluted by the human presence. His travels have taken him to more than 40 countries and all over the US. He tries to spend a month or so each year photographing the rugged mountains and historic grandeur that characterize Italy.
Steve stuck to shooting film until finally embracing digital photography. He then learned that processing a photo on a computer could be as rewarding as working in darkroom. He now works to create closely unified color schemes in bold but simple compositions, an outgrowth, so to speak, of his efforts in designing colorful garden vignettes and his interest in the expression of color found in tropical countries. That embrace of simplicity and color have inspired him to pursue the joy of discovering new landscapes in places near and far.
