Catherine Lees is a contemporary textile and mixed media artist whose work reflects a lifelong interest in creativity and design.
Currently Sydney based, I have been fortunate to live in the United States, United Kingdom and Hong Kong and be inspired by these international arts communities.
While I value the traditions of stitch, my approach is contemporary – exploring elements of abstraction, colour, surface effects, and rhythm to express concepts that are of interest.
I experience joy in stitching and am attracted to the immediacy and tactile quality of working with stitch processes especially when combined with non-traditional materials such as metal. I have a curiosity about the contradiction of textile delicacy and strength; and conversely the strength of metal that can be formed into more fluid shapes.
Recent exhibits include Gallery 76, Embroiderers Guild of NSW, and this year as a finalist in the Wangaratta Contemporary Textile Award.
