MessageI am fascinated by the concept of meat and the conflicting ways it is understood within our culture. To me, meat embodies the cognitive dissonance that permeates modern capitalist society: it is at once a banal, everyday object and a site of profound horror when we are forced to confront its origin within a once-living body. By invoking the tradition of memento mori still lives, this piece emphasizes the grotesque reality underlying this, reestablishing this link between meat and death as a metaphor for the way social conditioning justifies and obscures everyday forms of harm, encouraging passive participation in systems of oppression as a way of life.
