This piece was born from doom scrolling and landing on a meme. Lujan Perez' source imagery varies from the extremely personal to the impersonal. The tagline above the image, which is an illustration by sisters Anna and Elena Balbusso for the book ‘ The Canterbury Tales’, reads ‘when you look at your crush and start building your future together in your head.’ The spirit of the piece is a tip to how information is dissipated in our times, a celebration of how inspiration is found and rejoiced in.
What first drew Lujan in to the image was the frame within the frame (which is something found a lot in her work), and the notion of ‘building a future with our crush’, that she thought was hilarious. The leaves that are woodcuts are meant to envelop the scenes within, a metaphorical safe space where anything you care for goes; the people that inhabit the scene are to be non gendered and ageless (like when you look at someone for too long and can’t figure out if they’re 12 or 40) specificity kills the wandering mind sometimes. This is meant to memorialize silliness, daydreaming, the grass that is always greener and how short our time here really is.
