“PELEA 3 [FIGHT 3]”, 1962 SIGNED ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING BY THE COLOMBIAN ARTIST LUCIANO JARAMILLO (1938-1984)
This remarkable Figuration painting, created by one of the most prominent Colombian artists of the 20th century Luciano Jaramillo, is an excellent example of the artist’s “Insectos” works from 1962.
The medium is oil on canvas, measuring 31 3/8 x 47 1/4 inches in size. Signed and dated by the artist in the lower right: Luciano 62, and also titled, signed and dated by the artist on the verso of the canvas upper left: Pelea 3 Luciano JARAMILLO Abril 62.
The exhibition titled Insectos [Insects], of works by Luciano Jaramillo, was held at the Biblioteca Nacional de Colombia (Colombian National Library) in June 1962. Following the exhibition, the article “Jaramillo: Pintura visible y audible” [Jaramillo: Visible and Audible Painting] by Marta Traba (1923-1983), the Argentine art critic who spent many years in Colombia, established the young artist Luciano Jaramillo as a major talent after his work was recognized by one of the most influential intellectuals of the period. This article helps to understand the arrival of a new existential, pessimistic, and violent form of Figuration – heir to the work of Alejandro Obregón (1920-1992).
