Elemental Cloud is based on the dramatic color transformation in leaf foliage that is seen as the seasons change, symbolic of the beauty of impermanence and rebirth. Lovell used the chemical reaction of various patinas on copper and iron elements to create an organic coloration gradient. This process speaks to the elemental underlying cause of the actual color change in plants — oxidation. Cloud-like and airy, suspended above the heads of visitors to this library, the piece was designed to draw the eye up and to fit uniquely into the architectural design of this atrium. Great care was taken in the creation of the facility to preserve the historic oak trees on the property, and this artwork speaks to our wonder in their presence and to the lush surrounding natural environment in Milton and North Fulton County.
