MessageIngrid Yuzly Mathurin, a Haitian American artist, infused her life with meaning with each hardship she had to face. Her first-hand tangencies with abuse, teenage pregnancy, family mental illness and immigration served to shape her into a complex, multifaceted person whose art evokes the depths of the human experience.
Ingrid’s work is born at the juncture of her interests in African spirituality, female empowerment, social justice and mental health. Born in New York and raised in Florida, Ingrid has delved into a vast array of behind-the-scenes investigations of what it means to be a black American, a woman and a scholar in different social circles across the country. Ingrid has long been drawn to what lies behind appearances – and her portraiture work unveils details of her life-long findings in tiny glimmers of hope captured in well-etched eyes or traces of confidence in subtly elevated lip corners.
A versed artist, Ingrid began exploring drawing and graffiti art from a young age, acquiring diverse skills with time. Today, her works harmoniously combine a mastery in acrylic and oil painting, graffiti art, drawing, film photography and printmaking. Her current explorations reunite her studies in design and illustration with the lush plants of her background in urban farming.
A cathartic practice, Ingrid’s art-making serves to unify her past experiences, present challenges and future hopes. Ever sensible to details, Ingrid prepares her own pigments to better convey messages of love, strength and resilience through precise color strokes. For the artist, color is a vehicle to her African spirituality – each yellow, white and blue gently strewn over the canvas channels her belief in spirits watching over her as she undergoes a spiritual rebirth.
Ingrid’s dedicated art practice led to works displayed in Journey To South Africa, an exhibition held at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Museum of Art in South Africa. In 2019, she created mural for a community project known as #kaeperbowl, a collaboration with the non- profit organization, BLOOM ARTS and Power Haus Creative. Using a pointillism technique, Ingrid’s image of Collin Kaepernick, a leading contemporary social rights activist and athlete gained recognition nationally and internationally amongst other Atlanta artists.
