MessageMia Merlin is an Atlanta native and lived there until 2014 when she began teaching as a Lecturer in Art at Georgia Southern University, Armstrong Campus, in Savannah, GA. Previous to her current position, she completed a three year Visiting Lecturer position at Georgia State University and has also been an instructor at Spelman College, Emory University, Georgia Gwinnett College and Kennesaw State University. Merlin studied Psychology and Comparative religion as an undergraduate at Hampshire College and did not take her art making seriously until long after graduation. This happened in no small part through finding her mentor, Ralph Gilbert, who believed in her and saw her potential long before she or anyone else did.
She has had solo exhibitions at the University of West Georgia, Emory University, Georgia State University and Fay Gold Gallery. Collections she has work in include King & Spalding law firm and the Estate of artist Fairfield Porter. Her solo exhibition “Birthday Party” was rated among the top 10 art shows of the year by Atlanta’s art magazine, Creative Loafing. Other exhibition highlights include exhibits in Vatican City and Manama, Bahrain through the Art in Embassies program, Fiat Lux, a nationally juried show sponsored by the Phillips Collection, Art at Play at The Huntsville Museum of Art in Alabama and the Rosenthal International Juried Exhibition where she won Best in Show. Recently, her work was published in the “Menninger Perspective,” an international journal for the Menninger psychiatric clinic.
