This is an early piece from the beginning of the Tidal Zone Series, done directly from a series of on-site drawings and imagination.
At this stage of this series the artist is beginning to lean more strongly towards abstraction incorporating some ambiguity in the composition by moving the view in very close, while at the same time using a very low eye level to add a sense of monumentality and towering scale. The truth of this scene is that its actual scale measures no more than twelve inches from top to bottom.
Once the light and dark values were well established, richer color mixes and their complimentary colors were "pushed" into the painting, to try to give it more resonance and color vibration. These techniques may be seen in many of the earlier works in this exhibition.
