This study captures a sedimentary rock specimen, where an impasto technique mirrors the natural geological layering. The painting's conceptual dynamic is seen in the deliberate contrast between the organic and the artificial - particularly in the stark white circular mark and green accent tags against the warmly rendered, striated rock surface. Through thick, textural brushwork and sophisticated lighting against a dark background, a simple geological specimen is transformed into a meditation on how humans try to document and categorize the natural world.
The thickly brushed impasto effect is introduced in limited areas, reinforcing an abstracted modern approach which states clearly: "This is a painting"…with its own unique, authentic presence, rather than an illustration or illusion of a subjective reality.
