High Relief Paintings
It is the physical materiality that makes a painting different from a flat screen image. During this challenging digital era, I am exploring the physicality of paint. Each of these works is limited to one or two colors thickly applied. I do this with rough, sharp tools that give them a sculptural presence. Because of their relief character, they interact with ambient light and visibly change relative to the movement of the viewer. This painting was done in response to my mother's death, "Being on the Edge of the Void" speaks to the visceral, penetrating witnessing of her dying. We all live on the edge of that void. The old see it more clearly.
