This portrait of a strong, central figure explores both the duality of the individual and her interconnectedness to humanity and the universe. The celestial backdrop implies infinite possibilities, awe-inspiring systems larger than ourselves, and the beauty of self-reflection. The soothing color scheme and spiral symbolism worked into the cosmos surrounding the figure serve to move the eye around the composition and imply the origin of our existence. We are figuratively stardust, as some believe – infinite and simultaneously miniscule, but beautiful, regardless.
In some cultures, the red string is believed to connect us to people we are destined to meet or help in some way. Strength doesn’t always imply force. It can also mean the power to change people’s lives for the better or merely provide the support they need to do it for themselves. The model’s fragile beauty mimics the complexity of the universe from which she came, while also defining the simple concept of inner strength. She is blatantly feminine, reflective in pose, and on the verge of movement into a future of endless possibilities.
Inspiration:
An Untamed Woman
embodies the duality of
being delicate and powerful,
dark and light,
fierce and gentle,
strong yet soft
embodying both warrior spirit
and nurturing healer.
Red String Theory (East Asian)
Red Thread of Fate
The gods tie an invisible red string around the ankles or little fingers of those destined to meet or help each other in some way.
Body of Work Statement
In many cultures, women are celebrated for bringing forth and nurturing life. I believe it is this devotion that elevates our human place in the natural world and ignites our more complex creative pursuits.
It is for this reason that I incorporate portraits of women in my explorations of nature, combining symbolism and legends across species to illustrate narratives born of reverence and joy – for the natural beauty that we all possess, and our interconnectedness to the larger world of which we are a part.
