This Witch Hazel ( vernalis ) is native to the Ozark Plateau, blooming in late February in the Ozark Mountains. It can be seen in Boston’s Arnold Arboretum. The flowers are various shades of red, rarely yellow, with four ribbon shaped petals. Flowering begins in mid winter and continues until early spring. The Latin vernalis means ‘spring flowering’.
