The glass sides of the elevator tower at Ball Square Station, Somerville, are based on Vaillancourt’s Tour Jeté Series, three 45” x 90” paintings inspired by the Ball Square neighborhood’s colorful shingled houses adorned with angular rooflines and railed porches. Two of the paintings are replicated as panels on the station’s platform.
Although painted in 2019, this is first time the paintings have been offered for sale. Clean linen sides.
General Glass International fabricated the glass for the elevator after Vaillancourt manipulated the imagery as vector files to fit the specs. GGI’s room-size 720 DPI printer digitally jets colored ceramic frit onto the surface of the glass, which is then baked into the glass during the tempering process.
The work illustrates Vaillancourt’s style of geometric abstraction with dancing motifs reminiscent of machinery, automation, and movement. The transportation industry is part of her family history. Two great-grandfathers designed or built horse-drawn carriages in Amesbury, MA, and her grandfather, father, and uncle all designed automobiles and airplanes in Detroit. The work at Ball Square Station, Vaillancourt’s first public art project, continues her family’s connection to transportation through her art.
