This piece is the first of a four-painting series entitled “Artifacts”. These paintings were some of my earliest works. The title “Let There be Spaces” is inspired by the poetry of Khalil Gibran. He expresses the importance of space in romance and relationships. What I love about “Let There be Spaces” is that it combines three different time periods which each reflect a different aspect of my growth as an artist. It features my earliest Jackson Pollack influence, my Hawaiian influenced abstract marker paintings, brought together with my penchant for framing and design. The piece is composed of 3 canvas boards which were painted together and then separated. On these canvas boards are 5 smaller canvas boards which were also painted together as one piece and then separated. This creates a physical 3 dimensional effect rather than an illusory one which I explore often. The entirety of the work is mounted on natural wood which was painted gold and then encased in an oak stained frame.
