Afterglow is a temporary, modular installation that translates site-specific air pollution data into a visual landscape intervention. Inspired by the atmospheric phenomenon of the same name, Afterglow seeks to make public air pollution data, enhancing its accessibility and allowing communities to utilize it for their advocacy further. The resulting work is a constructed performance rooted in the perpetual and the persistent. It asks visitors to stop and center themselves in the present to uncover the invisible layers of our environment that affect us all. The artwork does not capture data; it translates it into a visualization that allows visitors and residents alike to view and name the pollutants in the air we breathe, identify where they come from, and understand how they negatively affect the health of our communities and ecosystems.
Afterglow asks us to consider whether we can truly enjoy our landscapes if the air is toxic.
