Shot in the Koli National Forest in eastern Finland in 1998 on my first Fulbright grant there, “On Moss Log” is part of a series of numerous performances for the camera done that year in both video and still photography. Traveling in locations throughout Finland all the way into Lapland, I embedded my naked body in diverse landscapes from the arctic tundra to frozen lakes to make these works. This work was done within the year after I graduated from Hans Breder’s Intermedia program at the University of Iowa where I enrolled because of the impact Ana Mendieta’s work had on me when I first encountered it while still living on the east coast and prior to moving to Iowa for graduate school.
