Black-crowned Night-Herons are the most widespread herons in the world and they are fairly common in the marshes around San Francisco Bay. They are a social heron and nest in colonies in the reeds emerging at dusk to forage. Black-crowned Night-Herons have a bit of a sinister look and are one of my favorite subjects to paint.
