Biedermeier furniture and style is an early 19th-century furniture and decorative style that was developed in Austro-Hungary including Germany, Austria, and Northern Europe after the defeat of Napolean by the congress of Vienna in 1815. While much of Europe was moving from the Neoclassical into the Romance period, Biedermeier design took an interest in combining simple, outdoor furniture concepts with indoor design. The design aesthetic was a kind of bridge between the straight heavy lines of the Neoclassical style and the rounded voluptuousness of the Romantic style. The Biedermeier period was mainly developed in Germany. While some Biedermeier styles did spread across Europe, the true Biedermeier period was particular to German/Austrian history.
