Various red-colored fruits and vegetables arranged on a platter of red glazed porcelain, on a red cloth, in an exterior light—many, many shades and tones, developed by applying layers of textured paper over watercolor, painted on birch panel.

I was inspired to paint this quite a few months ago....and it was the actual differences in the red tones and shades of the onion, tomato varieties, apples, and potatoes that took me outdoors to a table, where I photographed them, backlit, which accentuated all the darks. When the Square One idea came along, it fit right into my plans for this painting... I had coated a birch panel with Watercolor Ground, which would have given me a smooth, matte surface IF one of my CATS had not strolled across it while it was drying. I decided to leave the now rough surface to help accept the vast mix of papers in the collage, and it added to the watercolor underpainting with unexpected texture!😄 Janice Gail
