Perry and I took a trip through southwestern Montana and visited Big Hole National Battlefield. I was not prepared for the emotional impact it had on me. It's called a battlefield, but was actually a massacre site, where over 90 Nez Perce were attacked as they slept in their tipis. I knew the story of the Nez Perce and their desperate flight for survival, but never had the details felt so abhorrent as to see the site in real life. I painted two pieces immediately, this is the first, "Unfinished Story".
