This painting was motivated by an event that occurred in November 1999 when a mother escaped Cuba to find freedom for her and her 5 year old son, Elian Gonzalez.
Sadly, this mother perished in the storm and while her son survived the ordeal, it became a political tug of war and the child was returned to Cuba.
