Wine Dark Seas by Erin N. Power, Image 1.
Based on a series of drawings completed on site of different aspects of an ancient wine factory from Hellenistic times on the shores of the Aegean Sea. Following the drawings done on location, this painting was made in the studio, combining different aspects of the environment. The footprint of the building, combined with the view one sees from the site, the grape pressing stones, and vats for filtering wine, lastly the amphora to carry it in the holds of the ships across the sea. The painting only uses black, white, yellow ochre, viridian and vermilion colors to relate to and connect with colors that would have been used in frescos and work from ancient times.
