Each spring in Holland, Michigan, the city comes alive with a vibrant tulip festival after the long winter months. As part of this annual tradition, local artists are invited to submit original, poster-sized works for consideration in the festival’s promotional campaign. A rotating juror selects the top 20 entries, from which a committee chooses the final winning piece. A second honor, the People’s Choice award, is determined by public vote.
Since 2023, I have submitted one to three works each year for this competition. While this particular piece was not selected for the top 20, it reflects an idea I’ve been drawn to over the past few years—the possibility of walking through endless fields of tulips stretching all the way to the lighthouse on Lake Michigan.
It is truly a magical season and a continual source of inspiration—an artist’s dream.
