Hiromi Katayama is a Japanese-born artist who works in the Nihonga style, a traditional Japanese painting style that utilizes natural pigments and delicate brushwork. In Nihonga, colors are not mixed, instead they are layered on top of each other to create deep unique colors. Katayama’s paintings celebrate the beauty of nature with floral and botanical motifs. Her work demonstrates how personal history is influenced by one’s culture, which originates through nature.
Initially trained by her mentor, Renjoin Sensei, in Ibaraki, Japan beginning at age nine, Katayama later earned her BFA in Japanese Traditional Painting and MFA in Painting. She currently works from her private studio in Houston, Pennsylvania.
Katayama’s paintings have been exhibited internationally and are featured in museum collections, corporate spaces, and private collections. Through her exhibitions, she seeks to educate and share the traditions of Japanese art with a global audience.
