Artist: Doreen Currie (American)
Doreen Currie is a painter and fourth-generation native of Latrobe, Pennsylvania, where she still resides on a portion of her great-grandfather’s farm. As a child, she was drawn to the beauty of the countryside and began painting outdoors, also known as Plein Air, which is French for “in open air”. Painting outdoors would later define her artistic practice.
Currie studied art and design at Seton Hill University. In 2004, her transition from using watercolor to oil paints deepened her passion for Plein Air painting. Inspired by the same landscapes she was drawn to as a child, her work captures the farmlands, strategically plowed fields, grazing cattle, and light.
Equipped with her French easel, her paint box from college in the late 1960s, and a backpack full of painting supplies, Currie embraces the Plein Air tradition much like the Impressionist masters before her. Currie hopes to inspire the viewer to slow down and see the beauty in nature.
