This piece relates to the satirical movement titled Pianists in which piano scales are run in a manner suggestive of student practice. I chose monarch caterpillars for this piece as they are similar in appearance to piano keys. Moreover, the allusion to practice scales suggests the unseen efforts involved in reaching maturity or proficiency - similar to the caterpillar munching on milkweed leaves as prelude to transitioning into a butterfly.
- Subject Matter: monarch caterpillars, milkweed
