I chose monarch caterpillars for this piece as they are similar in appearance to piano keys. Moreover, the allusion to practice scales suggests the unseen efforts involved in reaching maturity or proficiency - similar to the caterpillar munching on milkweed leaves as prelude to transitioning into a butterfly.
