The image shows a Great Auk chick hatching out of an egg. Great Auks were driven to extinction around 150 years ago. As their rarity increased, specimens of the seabird and its eggs became collectible and highly prized, and the poaching of countless eggs for collectors contributed to the demise of the species. These specimens can often be seen today in Natural History museums, and the arrested potential they contain is extremely poignant to me... Here, I envisioned one of them hatching a live chick.
