Howard Pyle's books of Arthurian legends were immensely formative to me as a young artist. I read them voraciously, adored the illustrations, and doodled imitations of them in the margins of my homework. Apart from the artistic lessons I was learning without realizing it, the illustration of the Damsel Lynette always particularly stood out to me, because as a child she reminded me of my mother. Now that I am grown, for better or worse I have come to look more like my mother, and thus in turn (at just the right angle, if I squint a little and flatter myself quite a lot) perhaps a bit like that lady from the pages of my childhood. It feels oddly fitting to offer this painting as homage to those lessons I have not forgotten.
