Reynard is a trickster fox that can be traced back to ancient fables, Latin epics, French poetry, and English prose! In stories that include him (my favorite being in Chaucer’s the Nun’s Priest’s Tale) his character uses wit to outsmart or trick the other animals. He’s largely a literary satirical figure to critique medieval society and politics, but his character’s prominence appears even today in media like Disney’s “Robin Hood.” In many of the medieval illustrations Reynard is hiding or in disguise, so I figured having a fox hidden beneath a cloak would be a fitting nod to him!
