The moment life begins, death also occurs.
Death is frightening because it is a completely unknown realm within the world of life surrounding us,
but this is also why it's a source of endless inspiration for many artist including myself.
'Oni' is known to come from an area opposite to the realm of life.
My work "迎え" for group show at Haven gallery is visualized when we face the fear of death that was buried deep in our being.
The moment Oni came out to meet the dead soul.
The moment the work draws is very frightening, but I hope you to discovering the beauty in it that can't take eyes off.
03. Frame and Bujeok(Korean Talisman):
Something like dirt on the frame was purposely staged,
because I wanted to make it look like something dug out of the ground deep(like deep in mind).
It's a frame that was originally designed to be that way, I just want to let you know this!
What's inside the golden envelope is a Korean Talisman, Bujeok.
In this work, I drew Yokai and dead souls, so I put them in a way to kill mischievous spirits that might stick to the painting (white paper),
and to turn bad energy into good energy in general (yellow paper). :)
These are superstitious things in Korea, but I would appreciate it if you could think of them as items that will add fun when watching the work.
