The love story of Cupid and Psyche is one of my favorites from Greek myth. Aphrodite, jealous of Psyche's beauty, gives her a series of tasks to complete. Here, she is shown with a jar, given to her by Persephone, that contains a sleep she will not wake from. Though she was told not to open the jar, Aphrodite knew that Psyche's curiosity would compel her to do so. She is about to fall into a deep and permanent sleep, but is ultimately saved by Cupid, who restores her soul and helps to deify Psyche. Her transition from mortal to god is symbolized by the wings on her back.
