“I think lionfish (Pterois) are beautiful animals and I've always wanted to create something with their forms. With this figure I wanted to combine their slow, easy gracefulness (except when they strike prey) with how dangerous they are, how they are simultaneously attractive, elegant, and untouchable. She is clearly human although with enough of the attributes of a dangerous creature to warrant the bright warning colors. I also wanted to hint at a mermaid form without actually depicting a mermaid — instead I’ve tried to create an air-breathing, talking, elegant, and appealing creature that one doesn’t really know how, or if, to engage.”
