Lucie de Syracuse was born in 1981. She studies contemporary literature. Fond of the 19th century literature, Gerard de Nerval and Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann work speak to her about rebellion and ecstasy. She finds out about the new form of publishing, the romantic books adorned with grotesque and fantastical drawings from such rare illustrators as Johannot and Nanteuil. It’s in the basements, the attics, the antiques markets where she collects the left aside, broken or strange toys, the dried flowers or objects from the past that will offer her the best material for her visual playlet. She builds, inside of bulged glass frames, poetically strange pieces.A strange familar, map of a forgoten journey, who puts the eye in the middle of a fantasy game. Frames where unsettled powers are at work. Frames where fragments, litter, broken pieces do question the splitting of our thought, of our memory. Frames where the sublime and the grotesque meet up in all the spaces left open to imagination.
Lucie de Syracuse models and moulds her creations in Bordeaux.
